Standards Development Work Programme 2006
Stage Code for the Development of Standards Standards Approved by National Standards Council during December 2005 and January 2006
The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) was established under Act No. 11 of 1984 by the Parliament of Guyana. It is an agency for which the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce holds responsibility.
The affairs of the Bureau are directed by a broad based fifteen member Standards Council which is the policy making body for supervising and controlling the administration and financial management of the Bureau. The Director of the Bureau is the chief Executive who manages the day-to-day administration of the institution.
The Standards Act provides for the preparation, adoption and promotion of standards in relation to goods, services, processes and practices used locally. Standards are developed by Technical Committees which operate on a consensus principle and the public is given the opportunity to examine and comment on all drafts before they are adopted or adapted as National Standards.
The Bureau also administers the Weights and Measures Act No. 15 of 1981. This legislation gives the institution the responsibility for regulating all weights and measures activities. Under this Act the Bureau also has the responsibility for managing and coordinating metrification of Guyana.
The GNBS is a participating member of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT), the Caricom Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), the International Organisation for Legal Metrology (OIML) and the IEC Affiliate Country Programme. The Bureau is also the National Contact Point for CODEX Alimentarius matters and the enquiry point for WTO TBT matters. As much as possible the Bureau adopts or adapts international, regional or other national standards.
Implementation of the Bureaus mandate falls under the following programmes: Laboratory certification, Product certification, Quality and environmental management, Conformity assessment, Standards development, Standards promotion, Standards implementation, Weights and Measures (Legal metrology), Metrication and Public awareness.
This publication contains a list of draft standards which are being developed and the status of each. A full list of all the standards published by the Bureau is contained in the Catalogue of Guyana National Standards which is published every two years. The work programme is published twice a year in January and July.
