A safety helmet offers significant
protection for motorcycle riders. Additionally it cuts down wind noise,
reduces fatigue from the wind and keeps the rider more alert.
Here are some useful tips to help
motorcycle riders’ select quality safety helmets.
- D.O.T. Certification: A helmet is of no use if it
doesn’t provide protection and the D.O.T. (Department of Transport)
sticker on the helmet is your assurance that the helmet will perform.
The D.O.T.
standard requires among other things that a helmet should absorb a
significant amount of impact energy, prevent penetration and have a
fastening system that will withstand significant force.
- Retention: The helmet should not come off easily.
- Fit: A helmet should fit snugly. If you roll
your head or shake from side to side, it shouldn’t come off.
- A full coverage, open face helmet offers better
coverage than a short half helmet and a full face helmet offers more
protection than an open face style.
