Press Release 2005-02-28

ONLY METRIC SCALES SHOULD BE IMPORTED

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is reminding all importers of scales, weights and measures intended for use in the commercial sector, that only metric devices and not the dual type (metric and imperial) should be imported.

The GNBS has observed that  the dual mode devices are misused, as vendors, retailers  and shopkeepers only use the imperial components to weigh and measure items for sale to consumers, and since the GNBS only verifies metric devices, dual mode and imperial devices will be seized and removed when found in commercial use.

Importers of scales, weights and measures, metre rules, electric meters and water meters are also reminded that they must be registered with the GNBS annually and that all customs entries pertaining to the above items, must first be submitted to the GNBS for examination before the release of these commodities at the Ports-of-Entry.

Importers are also required to ensure that scales, weights and measures used in commerce must first be verified as accurate by the GNBS prior to being displayed at their respective business premises for sale to the public.
